Definition

The length of one MINUTE of arc, measured along the MERIDIAN in the LATITUDE of the POSITION; its length varies both with the LATITUDE and with the FIGURE OF THE EARTH in use. Used in NAVIGATION to measure distances on sea charts using the MERCATOR PROJECTION. Not to be confused with NAUTICAL MILE or INTERNATIONAL NAUTICAL MILE.
