Definition
The PHENOMENON which occurs when a ship of low propulsive power negotiates water which has a thin LAYER of fresher water over a deeper LAYER of more saline water. As the ship moves, part of its energy goes into generation of an INTERNAL WAVE which causes a noticeable drop in efficiency of propulsion.
