Definition

The establishing of a LINE OF POSITION from the OBSERVATION of the ALTITUDE of a CELESTIAL BODY, and the calculation of its ALTITUDE and AZIMUTH by the use of an ASSUMED POSITION. First introduced by Commandant Marcq St. Hilaire of the French Navy. See INTERCEPT, SUB-POINT. Also referred to as Saint Hilaire method or intercept method.
