Definition

In NAUTICAL ASTRONOMY, an OBSERVATION of a CELESTIAL BODY made by facing 180° from the AZIMUTH of the body. In LEVELLING, a reading on a LEVELLING ROD held on a point whose ELEVATION has been previously determined and which is not the closing SIGHT of a level circuit. Also written as two words.
