Definition
Any object, point, etc., toward which something is directed. An object which reflects a sufficient amount of a radiated SIGNAL to produce an echo signal on detection equipment. See RADAR TARGET, SONAR TARGET. The distinctive marking or instrumentation of a ground point to aid in its identification on a PHOTOGRAPH. In PHOTOGRAMMETRY, target designates a material marking so arranged and placed on the GROUND as to form a distinctive pattern over a geodetic or other control point marker, on a property corner or line, or at the position of an identifying point above an underground facility or feature. A target is also the image pattern on AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS of the actual MARK placed on the GROUND prior to PHOTOGRAPHY.
