A MAGNETIC NEEDLE used in compass adjustment to find the relative intensity of the horizontal components of the EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD and the MAGNETIC FIELD at the compass location. Also called horizontal force instrument. See COMPENSATION OF MAGNE­TIC COMPASS.
