Short for "binary digit", the digit in binary number representation. A bit can only assume the binary values "0" and "1". A binary number representation is composed of bits just as a decimal number is represented by decimal digits. A unit of 8 bits is called a BYTE. It also stands for "basic indissoluble information unit", a unit used for measuring the information content in information theory.
